A fellow clayarter wrote and asked what color kit I would=3DA0recommend for=

I don't use any other colors than the ones above. =3DA0All of the soft vari=
at=3D
ion and color blending that I get=3DA0come from mixing these colors. =3DA0T=
he b=3D
rushpainting method=3DA0I use softens the color, but the mixing is the same=
. =3D
=3DA0So if you use these and do not dilute, you will get=3DA0true color tha=
t wi=3D
ll look the same, streaks and all, when it fires up.
yellow + blue =3D3D greenred + yellow =3D3D bright orangeall the standard c=
olor=3D
mixing rules applywhite makes it pastel like sherbert, water makes it weak=
=3D
er,=3DA0black makes it darkerdon't use velour black for this, it will cast =
it=3D
all blue.
Brown is hard to mix (it tends toward gray instead) so I use=3DA0a specific=
b=3D
rown, and I paint a lot of foliage and seaweed,=3DA0so I keep a green on ha=
nd=3D
that is the darkest color for=3DA0my brush tip instead of always using bla=
ck=3D

Amaco sells a velvet underglaze pack called=3DA0
velvet underglaze set #4it has the colors I mentioned in 2 oz jars with the=
=3D
addition of=3DA0flame orangemedium blueamethystroseand light green
I mix these colors, including amethyst,=3DA0which is blue and red and a tou=
ch=3D
of brown
If I were teaching a bunch of 2-D people, like the women in my gallery co-o=
=3D
p,=3DA0how to translate their work to clay, I would have each of them buy t=
hi=3D
s kit,=3DA0or the other color group I listed for =3DA0the purists.
I would not have them use mason stains because the color=3DA0not being ther=
e =3D
until firing is not intuitive.
I would not use other pigments from other manufacturers=3DA0without a lot o=
f =3D
testing because some of them use mason stains=3DA0and vegetable dyes to mak=
e =3D
it seem like it is the actual colors. =3DA0And then when you blend them, bi=
g =3D
surprises after firing when=3DA0they interact with the other stains or the =
gl=3D
azes.
If there are any color makers out there that can say their colors blend tru=
=3D
e,=3DA0please write in because I would love to know the range of what is av=
ai=3D
lable.
I have a long list of ones I already tried, but I am not noting them. =3DA0=
I =3D
am just recommending the ones that I have tested over 20 years=3DA0at every=
t=3D
emperature and firing method I know of, including wood,=3DA0and yes, you ca=
n =3D
get good color there, too.
Just be sure to not use a zinc included clear over them, as it will=3DA0mil=
k =3D
up and mute all of your color. =3DA0And Coleman's porcelain can kill it, to=
o.
