On the New Year I want to invite you all to check out=3D20
The 21st Century Glaze Project at www.Glaze21.org.

It has grown last year and the database of glaze recipes, cool tools, vid=
=3D
eos, resources, etc is even more impressive. (and it is still free to Ce=
=3D
ramic Artists.)

Please check it out and let me know what you think.

I rarely go to websites where you have to log-in to use them. My view
on it is this, you either have something you want to put out there and
share or you don't.

I really dislike having to be like James Bond and remember a zillion
different passwords to places. As a kid, I loved secret code stuff.
As an adult I find passwords cumbersome. I wish I didn't have to use
any. They get in the way.

At work, I have to change mine every three months, then there's the
one for my bank (that's actually three different levels deep), the one
for I have to use for paypal, and the one for ebay, and the list goes
on and on.

Since there are already so many glaze recipes out there in the public
domain, what would make me want to have to create another username and
password to look at more glaze information?

I would be more likely to peruse your site if there was no login
information required.

Paul, we looked at the site a few months ago. Now,
we've forgotten our ID and password.
Can you tell us why you require those?

John,

You raise a good question. =3D93Why dose Glaze21.org ask for a member=3D20
registration?=3D94 The simple answer is money. When we started the site m=
=3D
ore=3D20
than three years ago we decided to offer it as a free resource to artists=
=3D
,=3D20
schools and art centers. The costs of publishing and managing the site w=
=3D
ould=3D20
be borne by grants, corporate gifts and voluntary donations from members.=
=3D
=3D20=3D20

The plan is still a good one. The problem is that Foundations, Agencies =
=3D
and=3D20
Corporations often want to know what their money is supporting. In larg=
=3D
e part=3D20
they want to know how many people are being served. With membership=3D20
registration statistics we can tell them what they want to know.

There are many fine recipe sources out there. We decided to create yet=3D2=
0=3D

another site because of the problems using the existing sites. First we =
=3D
created=3D20
a search engine that would make finding a glaze quicker and easier. By=3D2=
0=3D

entering cone, surface, opacity, environment and color the site serves up=
=3D
a=3D20
short list of recipes that meet the criteria. The other improvement is t=
=3D
he photo=3D20
of a test tile of each glaze. We are in the process of testing all of th=
=3D
e 600+=3D20
recipes on the site. Artists and art students are being paid to test an=
=3D
d=3D20
photograph the test tiles.

On a personal note, I am well into my sixties and can not remember when I=
=3D
had=3D20
a functioning memory. Remembering all of those login names and passwords=
=3D
is=3D20
a challenge. So, I understand your comments. If I could come up with a=3D=
20=3D

better way I would drop the membership sign up requirement. I am open fo=
=3D
r=3D20
suggestions. Meanwhile, I hope the benefits of the site outweigh the nee=
=3D
d to=3D20
remember another factoid.

There are some wonderful exceptions. People like Arnold Howard of Parago=
=3D
n=3D20
and Julie Brooks of Laguna have made major contribution without asking a =
=3D
lot of=3D20
questions about membership size and number of hits per week, etc. Others=
=3D
like=3D20
Jerry Bennett and Ron Roy have generously offered their expertise in supp=
=3D
ort of=3D20
the site. If there were more like them, we would not ask for membership=3D=
20=3D

registration.
