Slightly OT, but that reminds me of a retired engineer in my clay class at =
El Camino College in Torrance, CA a few years back. He was a great classmat=
e. He had wonderful ideas. It was always a pleasure peaking at what he was =
working on. He had learned to throw at a community center and when he came =
o El Camino, his skills and ideas just soared. I had to leave El Camino for=
a couple of years while I re-trained - this time as a nurse. When I return=
ed, most of my old classmates were around, but the retired engineer wasn't.=
I asked what happened and discovered that his wife didn't want all that po=
ttery around her house and pressured him to end his classes at El Camino. S=
omeone thought he might have gone back to the community center. What a wast=
e!!!!!

My studio is in the City. Minneapolis.

I have to say that what you are experiencing is something on the inside
trying to get out, and you see a studio at your home as a way to get there=
.
I am reminded of "Close encounters of the third kind" with Richard Dryfus
tearing up his yard to build devils tower in his living room.
Art is Exactly like this. And for a spouse or a love one that cannot grasp
what is happening, well it will cause problems.
And they sometimes think they are losing you. And you know in a way they
are. The trick is to be able to let go and be there for the artist or they
WILL lose them.

Can you afford studio space in another building? A potters studio in the
area you are in? This will get you out of your home and around like minded
people. And a lot of time this is a great thing.

In the end, "is a potters studio in the suburbs unreasonable?" NO it isn't.
But obviously for you there will be a price. Sometimes people destroy
their whole lives to get to where they need to be to be happy, be fulfille=
d and
to get what is on the inside to the outside. Are you happy the way things
are know? How can anyone reasonably stand in your way in something like
this.
