OK, I was raised by parents who never praised. Bring home an A- and they
asked for an A+. Drawings or paintings that did not look like a photograph
were of no value. There was a lot of love but no praise.

Years later as a suicidal adult I learned that I had low self-esteem. I
also learned that only I can raise that self-esteem. No amount of external
praise will change it. I learned to stop doing things that I did not do
well. [No more aerobics classes with mirrored walls and a room full of
mostly hard bodies (not mine).] And focus on the things that I do well, an=
d
enjoy doing.

Suicides are scary and every parent and teacher wants to prevent them. I
think one must draw the line at meaningless praise. Learn to monitor the
self-esteem and help the child find and do what they do well and reach out
from there to the challenging efforts.
