firing olympic torchbearer 2827g again in south carolina?

I gave up on firing my 2827G a few years ago, but am back at it again to
fire to Cone 10.

I have gotten the following suggestions and have implemented them.

1. ITC interior and shelves.
2. Set up a baffle 1 1/4" under lid.
3. Mine is a 4 burner so I have put flame baffles over two of the burners
to deflect the flames inward under the bottom shelf.
4. Bottom shelf is 4" off bottom.
5. I have two digital pyrometers to measure temperature at the top and
bottom of the kiln.
6. Will mark off top baffle lid so I can see how much movement affects the
kiln temp.
7. Made sure the burner intake is set to 1/4".
8. Bought John Britt's book on Cone 10 Glazes.
9. Have tested it for about 15 minutes to make sure all my burners are
working ok. Yea, I do get yellow flames when firing low.
10. Have got a 100lb tank, not using the small 20lb tankes.

Plan on a firing schedule of about 200 degrees F per hour. This kiln heats
up very quickly with the power it seems to have so I am going to try to hol=
d
it back.

If you folks have any other suggestions on this baby how about let me know
before I fire it next week.

Will let everyone know how it goes.

Use 1/2 shelves instead of full shelves so the gas can flow through the =3D
kiln. Also make sure there is adequate room around the sides of the =3D
shelves to get a good heat flow.

On the way down, try to hold the kiln between 1800F and 1300F for a =3D
couple of hours. This often helps glazes grow some crystals that make =3D
the glazes seem subtler and more varied.

Dear Randy,

Unless I'm mistaken you have a round hole for a flue in the lid.=3D20
Having fired one of these several times in the past, I suggest that in addi=
=3D
tion to the under-lid baffle you place two pieces of kiln shelf over the fl=
=3D
ue hole to create a slot and two damper plates. This will allow you to redu=
=3D
ce heat flow out of the kiln, therefore needing less gas in the early part =
=3D
of the firing (without creating an early reduction), and enabling you to co=
=3D
ntrol reduction in later stages.
With this set-up you will also find that VERY small changes in the aperture=
=3D
will have a substantial effect, so go easy.=3DA0=3D20

Using these mods in addition to those you have already addressed and the ha=
=3D
lf shelves as suggested by John, I had good consistent firings from this ki=
=3D
ln to plus cone 9.

It's not an easy Kiln to fire, but it does work if you keep alert to what i=
=3D
t needs and respond to it.

Sounds a bit "cosmic" I know, but any fuel kiln will tell you what it wants=
=3D
, you just have to learn the language.
