I'd like to put a lichen glaze on top of part of a sculpture that's already=
been glazed & fired @ ^10. It'd be nice & easy if I could just put it in w=
ith the electric bisque firing... does anyone have a recipe for something t=
hat might work? Are there any non-ceramic materials I could use to get the =
crackle look=2C since it's just a decorative piece?
Thanks!
-Erin

Erin...

I have done precisely what you are contemplating=2C with great results (at =
least in my own opinion). I used the following recipe=2C which I believe I=
culled from one of Tom Coleman's books:

Mud Crack #2Cone 04

=20

Borax 3.88

GB 46.51

Magnesium carb 31.01

EPK 18.6

100

=20

zircopax 6
I used Gillespie Borate in place of the Gerstley. I also add Mason stains =
for a bit of color.
I sprayed the glaze in layers over a cone 6 glazed piece. You have to dry =
the layers as you build them or the glaze will run. I used a torch as it i=
s faster=2C but if you do not trust your hand=2C then an electric heat gun =
will also work. Keep the heat source moving over the piece as you dry the =
glaze. After each coat dries=2C you can spray the next. I try to spray li=
chens and crawls very unevenly=2C but your own aesthetic will dictate.
Protect your kiln shelf well=2C as flakes of unfused glaze tend to fall off=
of the slippery glazed pot.
I will post a picture of a piece with this glaze treatment on my flickr pag=
e should you wish to see it: http://www.flickr.com/photos/jamesfreemanstud=
io/

Good luck with your project.

Hi Erin

there are many sources for low fire lichen glazes but if youd like to try a=
non fired surface there are many crackle products out there both at art su=
pply stores and at building supply stores like Lowes. You can add color und=
er the crackle and have a white or clear crackle or to the crackle itself. =
The nice thing about these is you can do differnet tests and see the result=
s right a way - a nice change from waiting for the kiln to finish cooling

Have fun
