the cracking little bowls

This is my 3rd attempt to send this out ..the Postmaster
suggested I start with new words.

Ok.

Big pots, and pots with footrings do not crack.

Little tiny pots, sans rings, do crack.

Why?

I believe S cracks result from stress and tension. For some
reason the pot tears itself apart.

Think of breaking open a peach...or a roll. Pressure is applied
to the outside, the top is tilted outward, as it were, and crack
opens.

I suspect this.

That as the inside bottom of the little pots is very small you
cannot get a rib in there to compress the bottom properly. AND
if you use a sponge you may be mopping up some clay. Suggestion:
Fabricate yourself a rib that will allow compression. Good for
this would be a long handled wooden kitchen spoon shaped to size.

That you make the bottoms too thin. Remember the bottom must
support the sides in the firing. Experiment with thicker
bottoms.

I think the footrings only mean that the original bottom was
thicker at the center.

That something is awry with the drying. Experiment with drying
the pots upside down, inside a styrofoam box or an old
fridge--some sort of box that prevents quick drying.

Good luck.
