Tony...

I am far from being an internet expert=2C more of a Luddite=2C but when I v=
iew your posts in the archives at lsv.ceramics.org=2C the links show up and=
work. When I view them in the mirrored archives at potters.org=2C they do=
not work. I believe the problem is inherent to potters.org rather than to=
the archives per se. For example=2C here is a link to your post in the ar=
chives with working hypertext: http://lsv.ceramics.org/scripts/wa.exe?A2=
=3Dind0809D&L=3DCLAYART&P=3DR16277

I think this is the problem. I think you and Lee are looking at two differ=
ent things.

Having said this=2C I wholeheartedly agree with you that including the enti=
re URL in the post is a good idea=2C as one could then copy/paste it even i=
f they used the potters.org archives.

All the best.

James,

Thank you for pointing out--I was not even aware of the list serv which requires a log in - which I've applied for but haven't been approved for yet. As you said, I suspect there, things are hyper linked and as with my experience, no hyperlinks are available at the potter.org. I think in the best interest of any transference between any format, archive, etc., as you also said, better to have the full link (even if its a whale) so any of use years from now will be able to and know to copy and paste into the browser to get to whatever anyone was referring too.

Thanks James for clearing this up. And in the future, I will be careful how I hold my mouth 8-)

Take Care

While expeditious, TinyURL and ilk can leave one hanging if the
target website rearranges their site without doing any of the
htaccess redirect niceties. It's often possible to parse a URL and
suss out its current location but that's harder to do with TinyURL.
(Still possible, but added steps.)

Case in point: A hypothetical site is redesigned. A document that
used to be at http://www.thisclaysite.org/redmudclay/pdfs/redmud.pdf
gives a "404 document not found" error. What to do? You can search
the site for "redmud.pdf" or if they've gone and renamed files
without doing any nice admin behind the scenes, you could look at
their new organization and eventually browse to their new /clay/mud/
red/ directory and search there.
