I have been waiting for someone to answer the question I have not
dared ask!

If the bricks of this fireplace that is to be faced with tile are
surrounded by a molding....why cannot the molding be removed, to
be replaced by a slightly deeper one, OR removed, and reinstalled
backed by 1/4 lath, OR why cannot a very narrow molding--and they
do come in very narrow be attached TO the molding so that it will
hold the tile?

Lili,
You can take off the molding and make tiles to cover the gap between
your new tiles and the wall or if you have an extruder you could
extrude half rounds that would cover the sides. You could match your
tiles or choose a darker value to act as a frame. The wood was there to
cover up the edges anyway. Mike Gordon
