Hi.
Does anyone know the substitution rate for changing a recipe from Sodium Si=
licate to Darvan. I have been using Sodium Silicate in my slip casting reci=
pes and want to try Darvan 7 or 811 but haven't been able to find how to ch=
ange the recipe

You guys have been so helpful=2C I really appreciate it!!

Why the desire to switch from Silicate to Darvan7? Just to see how it
works, maybe?

I've used them both and much prefer the silicate. Sodium Silicate acts
much faster.

Hi John=2C
I was told that Darvan is better to use because it is less damaging to your=
molds and some other reason that I cant remember right now so I thought I'=
d try it. I don't really need to go through the trouble of reformulating m=
y slip body is it doesn't work as well

Any information is greatly appreciated!
Z

Hi Z and John,

You're right Z, Darvan is less damaging to your molds than SS. The other
advantages are that it is much less likely to over-deflocculate the
slip, and the slip is more stable. It is possible to bring "OD'd" slip
back, but a lot of people just give up and start over.

I use Darvan 7 in my slip, and Darvan 811 in my glazes. Other people do
the opposite...

I think people typically use about 0.3% to 0.5% by weight, depending on
your slip formula. It's not as strong as SS, but it's still very strong!
To make a final re-adjustment on 5 gallons, I might typically use 1/4 to
1/2 teaspoon max. In small glaze batches, I use it by the drop.

You could try a small test batch of your slip, and carefully weigh how
much Darvan it takes to get the flow that you like. I've read that
Darvan doesn't work well on slips that are high in CaO.

Best, DMH
