calcium nitrate and invitation.

I use calcium nitrate as a flocculant-- basically take the agricultural
stuff and blunge in water and screen thru coffee filters. There is still
some precipitate left so my idea was to make a sand filter with some PVC
to clear up the solution.

Much to my surprise, I now have the strongest DE-flocculant that I've
ever seen.

Could anyone explain to me what has happened? My initial hypothesis is
that the silica has made calcium silicate but I'm not even sure what
calcium silicate does. And would that silica be that lightly bonded in
sand?

On a different note, if you are in North Florida next weekend, please
visit my Holiday show here at the studio. Porcelain, Stoneware, and
collaborations in Red Earthenware with my friend Lennie Kesl. E-mail for
directions.
