Hi Gang,

I want to post a special congratulations to our own Vince Pitelka and his
student, Kathryn Livesey for the presentation of her work in the September
CM. The displayed teapot and cup are wonderful examples.

The Appalachian Center for Crafts continues to be one of the best (I might
argue the best) at promoting excellence in artistic craftsmanship. It
certainly will continue on this course with our good friend's hand at the
ceramic tiller.

I would like to extend heartfelt thanks to Larry Kruzan for mentioning that
my student Kat Livesey was selected for inclusion in the Ceramics Monthly
Undergraduate Showcase, which can be viewed in the current issue and on
their website, and for his very kind comments about my ceramics program at
TTU. That is very generous of you Larry, and while I hope that we are one
of the best, I know that we do in fact promote excellence in artistry and
craftsmanship. It is always gratifying to get any sort acknowledgement for
what we do, and what better acknowledgement than seeing my students receive
this kind of attention.

Okay, you've given me license to brag about Kat Livesey a bit. Several
years ago she was accepted into the TTU study abroad program and spent the
fall, 2007 semester at Australian National University, where she got to work
with Gail Nichols. Gail certainly deserves some credit for Kat's current
work.

The CM Undergraduate Showcase selects only 14 students worldwide, so being
included is a tremendous honor. You can see the Undergraduate Showcase
online at

Yesterday Kat came running into the studio with a huge smile on her face.
She had just received her acceptance letter for the Soda/Salt National
exhibition. She is beginning her second semester of BFA senior thesis, and
will have her thesis exhibition in December. Based on the idea of "daily
tea," she is making 365 teapots. She's halfway there, so it is no surprise
that her teapots are so good. We had a thesis committee meeting on Tuesday
afternoon and she had the 50 most recent teapots out on a table in the glaze
room. They were all good, and many were exceptional. No two were alike, and
yet they all looked like her work.

Hi Vince -

Will you be uploading any photos of her teapots. I'm like Hank, I
would love to see them.

Kat recently gave me a CD containing some images of her work, so I will
upload those to the student gallery section of my website as soon as I get a
chance. That may not be for a week or so, and I will post to Clayart as
soon as they are available to view. It will be my pleasure for you to see
some of Kat's teapots. Some of the most exciting ones in the group were
still in greenware. I can't wait to see those ones fired.
