the voice of the clay or "just a tool"

Ceramic Arts Discussion ListHi Lee,
What jumps out at me is .... "I Cringe" ....

I definitely respect what you say, and I feel that I understand your
meaning. That said, I think that at some point you will not cringe when
someone says the wheel is just a tool.

I operate a Gallery and studio in a tourist area. Many fine local painters,
photographers and even the pottery of a few friends. It has become necessary
that I understand that I am not demeaned by the ignorant statements made by
browsers. One of the Joys of what I do is the chance to offer education on
a variety of topics, and at the same time many will return the favor and
impart information to me. In addition to the the typical pottery questions,
I often entertain folks with the life cycle of monarchs, introductions to a
variety of odd plants and occasionally, fun with every day physics.

I love the new ( by new , I mean just recently came into my awareness)
pejorative: "You are such a Tool" I am not really sure what it means, but I
do resemble that remark.

....off to throw coasters .............

....first one makes 100 1/3 lb balls of clay.....

Regards.
Jim

Oh, come on, away with the pretensions now,
- It is just a tool.
- Albeit one than enables effectivly.
It is not romantic, mystical, religious, or away with the faeries
It is physics.
Most people respect their tools, some dont.
It is what one does with it.
How many carpenters do you hear , when praised on their work exclaim, my saw
enabled me?

Hi Pat,

Another way to appreciate this, is to start saying "It's just a Pot"
when regarding your own or anyone else's Pottery.

And, to start saying 'Just a Potter' or 'Just a job', or 'Just a way to make
money' when speaking of yourself or anyone else making Pots.

Just a thought...

Phil,

I am just a potter, and I do just make pots,
- what was your point?
My point was that is how any tool is used, rather than the tool being the
most important thing. and as someone else said, it was the bit about "I
cringe" that offended.-
- semi -intellectualised snobbery.- ?
The reason I still maintain that a wheel is just a tool is because this was
drummed into me as a student.

Pat...

Could it be that the comment stemmed from a "spirituality" (as much as I ha=
te that word) that you or I may not share rather than from "semi-intellectu=
al snobbery"?

Perhaps the poster should be given the benefit of the doubt. I personally =
saw no snobbery in the post=2C merely a different perspective.

Be well.
