How do I figure out the square footage of a catenary arch kiln? Is there
a formula?
Thanks..

Jeese Kelly, be patient. Didn't I tell you I'd get the formula from my
former student Jody Windus, who is a retired engineer. At any rate, he got
right back to me, and the formula for the volume of a catenary arch kiln is:

Volume = the length of the arch (front to back) x 4/3 the height x 1/2 the
base width.

For 4/3 the height, you would just multiple by 1.33. If your measurements
are in inches, then you would divide by 1728 to get cubic feet.

This is the formula that Marc Ward uses, and it will give you a good general
idea of the volume, enough to figure burners, flue size, etc.

Yes there is kinda, First figure out the area of the triangle the
front makes then multiply by its depth That will get you awful close.
just judging from the images I have seen of yours I would say its base
is about 3.5 ft and your height about 4 with depth of about 40
inches, if you stack inside the lip cutting the depth to 36 inches you
would end up with right around 21 cubic feet

By the way the area of a right triangle is its base times height
divided by 2 (Your kids would know this) And though it doesn't seem
that you have a right triangle there you actually have 2 back to back
down the very center in this case its about 3.5 times the two sides,
means 7 times the depth (3 foot) means 21 or roughly about that. I
would say you could safely say (once you get bag walls etc... you will
end up with 18 cubic foot of firing space.
