gold on temmoku

updated thu 24 jul 08

Barbara --

I use a mix of 50 rutile, 50 frit 3134 to get a
gold fleck effect over floating blue. I never
tried it over a tenmoku (though I have a recipe
for a tenmoku that gives you gold flecks without
any additives). I should think it would depend
on the formulation of your tenmoku, firing temp,
etc.

I've always used straight rutile on temmoko. I'm sure though it all depends on the temp you fire to. I go up to 2400.

The proportions aren't critical, but about half and half should do
it. I'd use 3134 rather than 3124, because 3124 has alumina and 3134
doesn't.

Hello Barbara Brown:

Here's a recipe that I use a lot. It gives a rich gold with crystals.

Rutile/Iron Over or Underglaze (cone 9-10 R or Ox.)

Red Iron Oxide #4686 25%
Rutile 25%
Ferro Frit 3134 10%
J-2 Ball Clay 40%

Anyone using this in oxidation might need some more frit as the iron will
not help flux the stain as it will in reduction. I use frit 3134 because
you get more bang for your dollar in terms of fluxing agents but one could
certainly try 3124. Also, J-2 Ball Clay is a Kentucky-Tennessee Clay Co.
product. Another ball would probably work just fine if you don't have
J-2. The high ball clay content keeps the stain from going into suspension
and giving weak results with high spar/whiting glazes like celadons and
tenmokus.

That's about it from the Peanut Gallery, Craig Martell still in Hopewell,

Hi Barbara,I used to mix rutile and colemanite 50/50, called it 'gold dust'.
At ^10 it left gold streaks over tenmoku. It worked nicely on other glazes
as well. I'm guessing that the 3134 is the sub for the colemanite.

50/50 by weight rutile and frit (Frit 3134 or Frit 3124 should work fine). Make it watercolor consistency.

I have a lot of oxide wash recipes on my web page. Just follow the technical links and it will eventually take you to a page with links for oxide wash and other glaze recipes, etc.

Hi Barbara,

I use 50/50 rutile and gerstley borate. Don't brush on too thick as it will
bubble or blister. I fire to cone 10 and it adds a nice touch.

Barbara & Steve
We add 10% rutile to our temmoku glaze, then use this over the base
temmoku. It is more 'golden' at the upper range for the temmoku.

I use 50% rutile and 50% Gerstly Borate by weight... it can be used on
other glazes also... over copper red and celadon it makes a rutile
blue effect... gold on temmoku and tomato glazes... try it
