mold release for slabs

Hello Clayarters. Finally I've found a good reason to write again .
I make some of my work with slabs and put them mostly on melamine
plates or trays....
I've been using a mold release used for soap but was wondering if
polietilenglicol could
do the job. I bought it some time ago when it was suggested for throwing water .
Has anyone experienced it?
By the way, after some years I've redone my site and wanted to invite
all to visit it.
All of my work is glazed earthenware.

Jorge,

By putting any liquid on a non porous surface, the clay is sure to
stick, dry unevenly because of the clay being unable to loose moisture
at the point where the clay touches the slick, non-porus surface. You
can use wood molds,=20
Plaster molds, Styrofoam molds, etc. Plaster will take some of the
moisture out and let the piece still be leather hard. Bisque fired clay
molds also work well. William Daley used Styrofoam molds. Look up his
work, really strong hand builds. For making trays Styrofoam will work
well. You can cover the styrofoam with newspaper, when the clay has
stiffened up some , flip it over and remove the paper. Another thing
you can do is take a piece of plywood, leave several inches around the
outside and for example cut out an ellipse. Then use an old sheet ,
drap it on the inside of the opening and pin or staple the cloth to the
outer edge of the plywood. You can use 2 X 4's to attach legs to the
plywood. Now the plywood is raised into the air several inches you
drape the clay slab into the mold. Using a rib you can shape and smooth
out trhe interior of the piece. I always scrunch up the clay around the
lip area so it doesn't dry out place plastic around the lip area.
Working the lip and base is done when your drapped piece is hard enough
to handle.=20

Regards,

Bill Merrill Hope some of this makes sense to you!=20
