the best way to post clayart/blue

updated thu 29 may 08

mel jacobson on mon 26 may 08

there are some very important aspects to using clayart.

send a fresh post to clayart, use the subject line.
try to be distinct. like `shino glaze`, quick and easy to spot.

if you reply to clayart...make a fresh post, copy and paste
a few sentences, then we know what you are talking about.
do not include 5 other posts in total...now that is disgraceful.
most have already read them, and do not need 300 lines
added to your one sentence comment.

most of us do not care to read one idea comments like..
`way to go`. or, `go girl`. or `stupid`....

that is not part of a professional listserv...try and
keep it classy.

if you want to make personal comments, write a note
to the person posting. keep it personal.

on a personal note, i have promised many people if we
are going to continue listerv clayart, and if other folks are
(like acers) are going to pay for it....it should be clean
and tidy. not full of angst, and crabby people with personal
semi paranoid or schitzo agendas. i have pledged to upgrade
clayart with the content, as well as the technology of the upgrade.

if you are just hitting reply, and adding all of the posts that
have been posted, of course you will get blue type.
the reply defaults to blue...and grimmmmmer has said so.
so, don't use reply, use a new post, and copy and paste.
it is the way clayart works.

i keep two address` in my address book
one named clay that is: clayart@lsv.ceramics.org
the other one is:
clayoff or: listserv@lsv.ceramics.org
if i want to post to you folks i just hit clay, if i want to
change things around, add or delete people, i use clayoff.
simple.
i never use reply to clayart, and often i get the subject wrong, as
i have deleted all the clayart posts and am going by memory.
if i saved stuff from clayart, my computer would be full in a few
days. i get rid of it.
save a few important posts, either good or bad. the archives
will be working just fine soon.
(it does work for me, but i go in coded.)
so, take a step up, get classy, post good stuff, good questions,
reply with good solid answers. do not keep old 1930's ideas
alive. we have far too much `iheardfromwallyatthejuniorcollege..he
told me`and you pass on bs.

Oy VEY!! Please let's not throw the baby out with the bath water.
Hitting reply will create a copy of the old post you are replying to,
BUT the blue color is a setting in each of our computers and we all
can change that!

I like blue because I can see the reply and the original post and not
have to guess which is which. Some people top-post and some bottom
post. Confusing without the reply coloring.

ALSO it's VERY important to maintain the original subject line. The
email THREADING feature of my email program makes Clayart so much
easier to read! Mel gets a pass, but the rest of us should be able to
use the reply button AND delete the part of the original post that's
not relevant.

In my program I can select the text I want to reply to and when I hit
reply my new email only has that text. VERY EASY!!

SO just to be clear, the color of the reply sections is something you
can change in your computer. Default is black. If it bothers you find
the part of your settings that deals with colors and fonts and change
the colors to black.

Hold that baby in your arms while dumping the bath water!!
Jennifer

PS If people start new posts for every reply it's going to get really
hard to follow the subjects. It's just as easy to use standard email
practices to include the relevant parts of the posts as it is to start
a new email. For me the solution would be WAY worse than the fix, if
everyone did what Mel is suggesting.

Perhaps I am not making myself clear.

I am not talking about the color of the text in quoted posts in
replies. That is a function of whatever email client one uses. I use
Thunderbird, and it has a blue line running alongside the quoted text
instead of colored text. I am talking about the use of colored text in
the original post that can be difficult to read. *That* is a function of
the original sender of the post.

I only asked this as a courtesy. Correct me if I am wrong, but don't
most discussion lists/boards with the ability to use rich text
discourage the use of difficult to read fonts and color? It seems so in
the culinary discussion boards in which I participate.

Don't get me wrong, it's fun to be able to use rich text to emphasize
and make a point. But when the whole post is like that, it makes it
difficult to read. I can always delete the hard to read posts, but I
hate to miss anything.

Jennifer, Thanks for the tip. This makes perfect sense to me. Since I =
don't post very often, this post is a test to see if your method works as w=
ell as it sounds. Thanks David jenkins
