cone six clay

I'm looking for a good, all purpose throwing and handbuilding clay for
cone six oxidation. Laguna has a dozen or so clay bodies in this cone
range but if any body has had any experience with great or depressing
results, I would love to hear about it. This would be primarily used by
High School students. We tend to like using the red or brown clays but
would consider a white body. Also should have some grit for larger
pieces. Thanks! Scott Harrison in the Redwoods where it's been raining
for days...

We mix a ^6 and a ^11 clay body. The ^6 has toasty color that
comes thru some glazes : Lizella Red ( Ga. ) - 30 lb., Hawthorne Bond
Fireclay - 20 lb., OM4 Ball Clay - 10lb. - that's it. We're now
substituting local clay from our land for the Lizella. Used to mix clay
in an old dough mixer. Have had a Peter Pugger from Calif. for @ 10 yrs.
now. and wouldn't trade it for a Venco or Bluebird. You can have your
toyotas and chevys, We like our CADDY ! semper fi

I have used Laguna's ^5 (does fine at ^6) B-Mix for over a year and
cannot recommend it especially for students. It throws well and is a
lovely cream color, but just about every handle I have tried to put on
my pieces made of this clay has cracked at the join in the GLAZE firing
- not a hint of a crack before that. I have tried all the tricks to
keep this from happening, have taken advice from Clayart members, and
talked to the people at Laguna myself - all to no avail. The B-Mix with
sand might be stronger, but it does not look like porcelain after being
fired with a clear glaze.

Our local pottery supply in Portland has recently developed a "rip-off"
of B-Mix that uses talc instead of nephy sye and I really put it to the
test - no cracks. I'm glad to have this alternative when I finish using
up the boxes of Laguna clay that I have for things w/o handles.

Sorry, I cannot comment on other Laguna clays except the ^l0 B-Mix which
gave me NO problems when I used it before going to ^6 as the ^5 version
did.
