Hi Asim,

One way of testing whether it is the infinite switch or the element is to
trade the top infinite switch for the bottom one. If the bottom element
now heats and the top one does not you have determined the problem is most
likely the switch. If the top element still heats and the bottom one still
does not heat the element is probably faulty. (Of course disconnect the
power before making any parts replacements)

Hello again Asim,
I realized I did not provide an answer to all your questions so thought I
would add to what I wrote earlier. For your Skutt kiln a very good source
of information is the Skutt web site :
http://www.skutt.com/support/support.html

If you have a multimeter you can check whether an element is good or not
by disconnecting power from your kiln, disconnecting the ends of the
element from the terminal block, and measuring the resistance of the
element. The elements for your kiln should measure 15 ohms or less. A
burned out element will measure infinite. Performing this test will also
give you a good chance to make sure all the connections are clean and
solid. Sometimes an element lead will oxidize or burn off at the
connection and all that is required is a proper cleaning and reconnection.
Element leads can sometimes be stretched to reconnect if the end has
burned off

It is not necessary to replace all the parts when one part wears out or
breaks. This would make the suppliers very happy and rich men. As to why
things break down or wear out, we have a saying "Stuff Happens", usually
when you have a kiln full of pots and a deadline. Some might even blame
the "kiln gods".

Again, good luck.
