I attended the opening of the Functional Pottery National last night in =
Lancaster, Pa. about 90 minutes SW of Philadelphia.
Jean Lehman and Co.did a superb job transforming the VERY large studio =
(Old Iron Works) of Kevin Lehman. Live music and delectable eats were =
provided by local eateries, and even the weather cooperated with a =
cloudless 80 degrees.No snow here.
The juror, Linda Arbuckle was on hand and gave a wonderful didactic talk =
and slide show of her work.
Afterward Linda held an impromptu discussion about selected works in the =
show and why she choose them.
All in all, a wonderful warm evening in more ways than one.

I also was at the opening and thought the facility/space was great.
Good to meet you Frank, even if just for a moment.

This was my first - first time work accepted and attending.

Drove up from Virginia earlier in the day and did galleries in Lancaster.
The drive and walking around all afternoon wiped me out, so I only stayed at
the SFPN show for about an hour and left before Linda's presentation - just
too wiped out from the day.

I enjoyed seeing the different approaches to functional forms.
It's always interesting to see what a particular juror selects, knowing that
another juror may very well select a different show.

There were more altered thrown forms, specifically oval shapes, than I might
have expected, but this may be a form Linda is particularly attracted to.
But then, I had no particular expectations.

All involved did a great job.

Hi, everyone.

Frank modestly neglects to mention that his beautiful
big black and turquoise platter was selected for the
Strictly Functional Pottery National show. Bill Schran,
whose crystalline vase also is in the show, was at the
opening, too. Richard Aerni wasn't there, but two of his
pieces are. The show will be in Lancaster through May 18,
and then it moves to Wayne Art Center in Wayne, PA,
May 27 through June 27.

Speaking of snow... after getting snowed in last Friday
in Duluth, Tony Ferguson escaped to Lancaster to provide
potters and other crafters with a fine individualized
workshop in photography for artists, organized by PA
Guild of Craftsmen

Finally, belatedly, two words about NCECA in Pittsburgh:
Thank you -- to clayart friends old and new for good times
and great pots, to my roombuddy, to clayart friends in the
vendor hall, especially Joe and Arnold, to the folks at
Standard who rescued us from a shuttle glitch, and to NCECA
for giving me an excuse to get back to dear old P-burgh.

Hey Lois,

I am so glad you were able to make it. It was good to meet you and John and some of the other clay-arters that surprised me with their attendance. I sadly did not have the time to get to see the SFPN.

A very great group at PA Guild of Craftsmen--great questions and interaction. There is always at least someone who brings something that is nearly impossible to photograph well. Well, this time I think there was about 6 people who brang everything from crystalline pottery, oil paintings, to clear glass, to very small diachronic glass and polished silver jewelry--I mind as well have been photographing mirrors! I think they ended up being challenges well met and certainly new ideas for solutions, different backgrounds, reflectors, blockers, etc. All in all, I think it was a good workshop. It was a true pleasure.
