my skutt kiln is firing cool.

I have a Skutt 818 electric kiln. Last night I fired it with the
following schedule;
300per hour to 1100f.
500ph to 1915
108ph to 2199 with a 15 min soak
9999 to 1950 with a 30 min soak
150 ph to 1000

The firing took 15 hours and my witness ^6 cone was barely bent. Should
I increase my firing temperature or do I need to call the kiln doctor?
The kiln is about 8 years old and probably has been fired to ^6 about 40
times and to 06 about 30 times.

If the temperature reading is off by a lot, you might need to replace
the thermocouple(s). the type k thermocouples commonly used in
studio kilns are not really suited to long term use at the
temperatures to which we subject them. If you've got big bucks go
ahead and buy the type s thermocouples. they are more accurate to
temperatures past which most of us fire.

The S-type thermocouple is definitely worth the price.
Before ordering one, find out if the controller can accept
the S-type. A controller on an 8-year-old kiln may accept
only the K-type.

You can adjust the controller to compensate for underfiring.
Since the cone just started to bend, the temperature is off
by only about 20 - 25 degrees F.

You could adjust Thermocouple Offset. But an easier method
is to program a higher temperature in Ramp-Hold mode.
