cleaning out a venco pugmill

HI all,
I've had this Venco 3: de-airing Pugmill for a number of years but
I'm getting a Peter Pugger and have sold the Venco.

I'm cleaning it out for the new owner and wonder if anyone out there
has any tricks or advice for getting the inside of the barrel as
clean as possible. I only have used one kind of clay in it so have
never really cleaned it out to this degree before. I have cleaned the
screens on a regular basis but not the barrel walls.

I have it apart and have gotten most of the clay out. But there is a
"stubborn" residue on the walls of the barrel. I've been scraping it
with an old chisel and wire brush. I've tried soaking it down with
hot water and also vinegar. Any other tricks? I have no idea why it
wouldn't just dissolve with water...my metalsmith friend says that
metal has interesting ways of reacting with stuff it touches...
Just wondering,
Jennifer
