Dear Friends,
May I suggest that anyone confused about the nature of Stains consult :
Glen C.Nelson, "Ceramics, a Potters Handbook". 4th Edition. ISBN =
0-03-042826-2
See pp 223-224 . There is a description of Spinel Stains, their =
properties, their preparation. Glen Nelson describes them as being =
highly resistant to attack by fluxes and to the effects of high =
temperatures. Also, see Glossary, p333 for "Stain".
Frank Hamer, "The Potter's Dictionary of Materials and Techniques". Page =
281 "Spinel". There is no entry for "Stains" in the 1st Edition, ISBN =
0-273-32465-3.
Also note that, like standard Transitional Metal Oxides, many stains =
give an alternative, possibly unwelcome, colour changes if fired under =
Reduction or beyond a temperature limit specified by their manufacturer

Best regards,
Ivor Lewis.
Redhill,
South Australia.
