nceca-wow!

i had a BLAST at the first NCECA i ever went to!

i was humbled to be around so many great potters and was honored to demo the new texture tool in laguna's booth. i enjoy throwing textured pots, and it seems i'm getting a number of people hooked on texture with The Steve Tool. i created and manufacture the tool, and distribute it to now some 36 stores across USA and Canada. i think i gained another 5 or 6 new stores from the NCECA show, so potters will be able to locate the tool at very likely any pottery store they like to use.

i really didn't get out much. i stayed mostly in the vendor exhibit hall. i demo'd for 5 hours on wednesday, and 2.5 hours thursday.

it seems while i was at the show "alone" from california, i was bumping into potters everywhere. Dan was checking in at the Days Inn when i got there. we had never met but had an India diner together. the next day i accidently met & had greek food with 6 lovely girls from new york city. (tana, sue, sara, chris?...shoot...i should remember these things...)

another accidental lunch with Nichole on Friday.

it was a treat to be around so much energy!

see ya next year in Pheonix!

NCECA, what can I say:
jam packed with programming, great demos, seminars
cool exhibits, books and more books, tools and more tools,
the best people in the world in the clayart room,
a mug exchange that was great fun!
a K-12 exhibit that would knock your socks off!
a pretty spectacular mug sale
a traveling airstream with great pots for sale,
ceramic artists of all ages together "in clay"
a beautifully organized conference,
Bravo to those who worked tirelessly on this one!

special thanks....
to Mel, for making the clayart room inviting
with his smile, his welcomes, his very presence.
to Ron and John for making us ^6'ers an "acceptable lot!"
to Rebecca Knight for doing a great job of organizing the mug exchange.,
brown bags, no fondling and all
to all that brought the wine/and goodies to the clayart room to nibble

to Pittsburgh for making us all feel so welcome, and
for changing your town so much (to accomodate us?!)
to one incredible human being, Bill Strickland
to Jazz
to rock and roll...

my mind is full, energized from one hellova conference!
great to see old friends,
great to meet new ones.

there is a comfort level in just being with others that love clay
it moves us, transfroms us
and so unites us!

I bought Steve Tool and tried it out a couple of days ago. It is great, and
I plan to make more textured pots with it. Congrats Steve on a great tool, and
I am delighted you are having so much success with it. Your demo was great
too.

All the best of luck.

That sounds like the way to do it Steve. I don't like the art/craft
fairs as a shopper. At the Uptown, I find the people on the map who I
want to see and bee-line straight to them. When we have the booth
at the Mashiko Tokiichi, I found it was much more tolerable just
sitting in one place and visiting your neighbors.

Hey Steve,
Stopped by to watch your demo on Wed at NCECA....all I can say is COOL TOOL!

Great energy at NCECA...so much to do, so little time! But whatever I chose,
especially the great times at the clayart room, it will be savored for the
entire year.

Warm regards to all who made it happen,
Susan

thank you susan! i have gotten a lot of e-mail from people saying thanks for the new tool. i'm glad to have reached a stage in my life where i can actually take a risk and launch a little product of my own. i always thought there was a market for this kind of texture tool. i joke with my friends about "in the future, when there are no smooth pots"... the little tool is very afordable and starting to be seen in many of our favorite stores. i'm finding out there are regions of the country without a local pottery supply store. i grew up too close to cities to realize that can occur. i hope those in such areas find this or other similar tools.

next year i will be more prepared to demo other texture schemes. like slip 1st, texture, stretch open. or trimming at leather and let chatter REALLY go crazy. or slip at leather and trim the pot smooth. (smooth?! did i say that?). one friend goes so far to texture with a strobe light on to see what he's doing while the wheel is spinning.

feel free to send me pictures of any work you do or any one you meet. i am slowly adding pictures to my main website of other people's textured pottery. i truly can not wait to see how people take the simple tool and do their magic with it. it's like i created a new guitar but knowing i do not play well i'm searching for those who can really make the tool sing!

i was too stupid to check online each night for where the clayart room was... duh! i sure missed a good gang there. next time i'll be a little smarter...

see ya
