Dear Claybuds... I tried searching the archives and have "Given Up"!!

I would welcome constructive advice on this subject and i hope its not too
much to ask:

My husband is planning on coming with me to Pittsburgh for NCECA which i
plan to attend this year and put faces with the names and maybe meet a few
people in person who've been such an inspiration to me on the learning
curve... we reserved a room months ago thinking that if i couldn't get the
time off of weurrrk we would cancel, no biggee... so the room is taken
care of, and we plan on driving down, so transport is good...

But, seriously, is it best for me to pay for all 4 days of the conference
and preregister (which i think i might have missed anyways as they never
responded to my request online anyhow) or should i register when i get
there? Should i go for the whole week, or just take a day pass for a few
days, is there a schedule for the conferences and talks and demos and such
so we can plan ahead what we should go for or should i risk just walking
around in a daze for all 4 days and get sensory overload and thus miss
half of it...

I feel at a loss here also as to what LOML will do for the 4 days... is it
worth it for him to come along to the conference itself, as he's
interested in ceramic arts but not a potter...? I know there are other
exhibits and sights to be seen and we plan on staying over til sunday or
monday to see some of the city's sights...plus we heard it was the most
romantic city on the USA...:)

What about the Clayart room, are partners welcome there? I am not very
good in a crowd when i don't know anyone... neither is he so we generally
keep each other company at parties... Will it be ok if he comes with me
for the mug exchange?

And finally, in Wayne's absence what should i do about a BOA?? i haven't a
clue where to find one in these parts and i think this year was intended
to be the rainbow colour but i fear i shall arrive unadorned!!??

So, i guess calming words of advice and an allaying of my fears is what i
seek in this foray into the fire-god's arena... please be gentle with
me... its been a tough week...

anxious....

My husband is also coming with me, tho he has little interest in NCECA, he
plans on doing museums on his own and us meeting up for dinner.---too bad we
can't link up the solo husbands or something? Or maybe that is just a crazy
idea?
Question: Can we buy the tickets to dance there? or does everything like
that need to be done before hand?

I have not been to NCECA since Charlotte, and really looking forward to it,
and seeing some old and new clayart friends in "the room."

Regards,
Susan

Thanx Liz!
always appreciate friendly helpful advice of which i got quite a lot
offline too... there will be less fear and trepidation entering the
Clayart room now! :)

as for the rest of the 4 days, we printed up the schedule and we'll go
over it to see what we want to see and work the other exhibits in around
that i guess... since we have a car i think we might forgo the bus tours
and do them on our own... not sure about the dance, we'll have to see how
tired we are!

apart from the evening of the mug exchange, is there another time that the
Clayart room is having an event? Is David Hendley playing guitar and
singing some night? Should we bring food and cocktails?

Anne,
in minus 11 celcius bright gorgeous sunshine in Saint-Sauveur...
insulation in man's or woman's best friend in these parts :)

the program and i got lots of suggestion offline so i feel lots better
about the whole thing... after all, its not like i can drive there each
year so might as well go for it and try to see as much as we can!

Dear Anne,
Glad to hear that you and hubby are coming, two more Canucks! I will
try to answer a few of your questions.

I think under the circumstances you might just look at the conference
schedule on line, figure out what lectures you will want to go to,
and buy a day ticket or two.
You can buy a ticket for the dance on Friday if you are interested in
that ! We all get badges and it is pretty strict for going to
lectures, and other events, including the dance and the Manufacturers
Supplies/Non-Profit Exhibits area. Of course all the exhibitions
around town are for anyone, so that would not be a problem for you.

I think your husband might feel a little lost if he went to the
conference. Think, 5,000 attendees scurrying around madly going to
look at videos, demonstrations, lectures, panel discussions,
etc.......
There might be a solution though, if he is so inclined, and that is
to volunteer to help out (NCECA) on the day that you buy a day pass.

I am sure that you and your husband would be most welcome at the
clayart room. Everyone makes everyone else feel right at home, it is
a wonderful place to go and relax and meet clayarters. Besides that
Mel will go up to you and stick a red dot on your badge (if you have
one) or somewhere on your person, I know that you will be greeted
warmly by clayarters. Bring a pot to exhibit in the clayart room,
and bring a mug for the exchange. It is lots of good fun, you will
feel at ease. Come up to me and say hello if you don't have a badge.
I would love to meet you.

Is there not a dollar store in St. Sauveur? I bet they have
something there, any color will do!

Hi Anne!

I brought my husband to the Clayart room last year and he was very
welcomed and had a great time. We each paid for just one day at NCECA
(picked the one that most interested us) and he peaked in on some of
the lectures that overlapped each other so we could get an idea of
both, and we both enjoyed watching the demos together and exploring the
market. The demos go on most of the day as does the market, so there
is plenty to see. Not to mention tons of exhibits, which we explored
on another day.

I was too late for one of Wayne's boas and am sad to think he and his
partner will not be there this year - they were both very welcoming to
Jerry and I who were attending for the first time.

The national library conference actually has a (much cheaper) pass for
those who just want to browse the exhibits and not attend the lectures
and that worked well to allow me to afford to attend with him when my
husband went few years ago. It would be nice to have a similar pass for
NCECA.

Can't afford to go this year, so please have some fun for me and DO
both go to the clayart room and the mug exchange. You won't regret it!
