credit card point of sale terminals

I'm shopping for my first electronic terminal and have looked at many,
but I have not found one that quite meets my needs.

The wireless units are nice, but I don't do enough to justify the
expense, but I definitely need an electronic card reader with printer.

I have found one that does what is called "store and forward". When the
card is swiped though the card reader, the receipt is printed, and the
data is stored to later be batch uploaded over a regular telephone line
at ones hotel or home. I find that what I need is really a "store and
forward" machine that is capable of allowing the batch upload to be done
through a USB connection to my cell phone. It is ridiculous to have to
wait until one gets home to connc to the phone line. And what about all
those people out there who have opted to get off the land line thing
anyway and don't have land lines at home anymore -- like me.

Anyway, I felt that with the collected experience of the members of
Clayart that surely someone may have run across such a beastie.

All comments and suggestions on the subject are solicited.

Thanks

Hi John,

I use a Nurit 8000 wireless unit. It has worked great for me since I gave up trying to use it as a wireless unit and use it in "Store and Forward" mode. The problem was not the machine - it was the cell service that it used to send through. In my case it was Cingular and I only had service at one show in a year. Cancelled the wireless subscription - set it up for S&F and have not looked back.

I have not had one instance of somebody trying to pass a bad card - but - it is a possibility. If I have a big dollar sale I can phone in for authorization - it just costs more - but I like the assurance.

Best Wishes,

John I answered this question a few weeks ago-just search back 2-4 weeks for the results-The
question was more on servers and costs. I have the nurit 8000-but veraphone bought them out
recently. If you do not need the wireless features go with a ceaper unit-contact merchant
wharehouse for equipment questions. Mark

I didn't see the original post, but I've had good luck buying refurb
machines online. I think one of mine came from Ebay. Just look for a
merchant with a good approval rating. I've never bought new.

You can get basic machines for $100-200.

You just need to find out what machines your merchant services
provider supports. There are some old models out there that don't
have enough memory for the new software. But you DON'T have to by
your machine from your provider. They are used to signing up new
customers that already have equipment. I would go with Veriphone over
Hypercom. We have the former at our gallery and it's a real
workhorse. Plus it has pretty purple buttons! My Hypercom at home
has some buttons that stick a bit...

These are all machines that don't have a wireless function by the
way. Never used one of those.
