Dear Ron or Sue,
Thanks for your gracious message. Most of the good art fairs are listed in
any of the regular craft publications... AmericanStyle, Amer Craft, Crafts
Report, Sunshine Artist, etc... you can get contact info there. Some of
the best shows have their own web sites (we'll have one soon). I hope
you're getting our Market Insider by fax or email, it has lots of info like
the Market Tips in every issue... plus other stuff that will help you
market and plan.

Regarding art fairs and the ... "try the show and find out" philosophy,
the biggest mistake I see artists make is underestimating the "direct and
indirect costs of doing an art fair. I would spend at least 8 hours of
time "investigating" a fair before applying. Most fairs you travel to will
cost
3,000-5,000 if you include lost profits and wages. Most artists I know
cannot do a retail fair without knowing in advance that they will do 8,000
in sales. There are only a few contemporary craft shows (maybe 10) that
can meet those sales objectives for artists (especially in the ceramic
category).

Ceramics as a category has (unlike glass art) had a tough time building a
market of committed collectors. There are a couple of small collectors
groups... but not enough momentum yet. There are too many ceramic students
that fall through the cracks and never get on a career path... are they all
selling clay supplies and working as adjunct professors at small community
colleges?

We must find a way to get more collectors interested in ceramics... the
cover of the latest AmericanStyle magazine features Michael Lucero's
work... "Lucero's World... Where Art and Life Converge. Michael had GREAT
photographs and knows how to express his ideas to a FEATURE writer (we
don't use the writings of critics, curators and academics).

We are planning a "collectors" discussion group for ceramics for the
AmericanStyle web site. I hope to have it up by March. It will be a great
place for artists to "lurk" and learn about how their work is perceived by
collectors, curators and critics! It will also be a great place to put
"appropriate contributions", answer questions, gracefully mention
exhibitions and talk philosophically about artists lifestyles and
objectives.

We are also planning on providing free web pages to all the artists on our
lists.. without addresses and phone numbers. Just bio type info that can
be easily accessed by collectors. If an artist wishes to modify their web
page there will be a charge. All information published on the web will be
with the artists permission.

I hope other artists can offer some suggestions on how we can work to
create new collectors... please send your ideas to me.

Thanks Again,

Wendy
