I normally wouldn't post messages to our group regarding commercial
enterprises, but the following was sent to me and the owner is a friend and
former student of mine. I have no other connection to the business

The prices are about 1/2 what you would normally pay.

Here's the message:

>Bear Creek Pottery is happy to announce it=B9s 5th Year in operation. We ar=
e
>offering our 4 different styles of kiln post at manufacturers cost. Attach=
ed is
>a PDF file with our order numbers and prices.
=20
>If you have any question please contact us at
=20
>Bear Creek Pottery Inc.
>301-860-1664 ext 11
>Or Sales@bcpottery.com

Again, I have no financial interest in this company, but if you contact Rob
to get the price list, tell him I sent you.

Well, Bill, you might ask your friend how he managed to get all of =20
our email addresses as it appears most of us received a 'personal' =20
sales pitch from him.

Bill - you might want to tell your friend that spamming has cost him
customers. Had it been merely posted to this group, I probably would
have bought some - I was just thinking I needed a couple more.
Instead, it was sent directly to two of my e-mail accounts. He's also
violated the CAN-SPAM act - no removal address, unsolicited commercial
e-mail, deceptive headers. That's a potential $11,000 violation - per
offense. Wonder if his business can stand $33K in fines?

Hello everyone,

For those how received this e-mail and you didn't want it I am sorry.

Our company, a small manufacturing pottery here in Maryland, hired GBC inc.
a promotions company to send out our 5th year anniversary promotion to the
Professional Pottery, Ceramic Shops, and artists. I apologize to anyone who
wished they did not get this. We were trying to celebrate not cause
problems. Once again I am sorry for if anyone got this that didn't want it.

Sincerely

Rob Kobus
Bear Creek Pottery Inc.

I did ask him and, as written in other messages, he did not get them from
the Clayart list.
A company he hired to promote his business collected the email addresses and
it is uncertain at this point if that company mined the addresses from our
list or from any number of other sources.

Bill

I received the email at an address I do not use for Clayart. I was not
overly upset about receiving it and will probably check out the site.

Why do you refer to this as spam? It offers a product useful to most
potters at a very reasonable price. I was quite happy to receive it.

If you don't care to get emails that come from having your address on a
web page then subscribe to hotmail and set the filter where it only allows
in those messages that are in your address book. Use ONLY the hotmail
account for any internet business and be sure that you don't use your
address name as a login name for any account.

This is simple means to limit junk and yet still allows you to glance
throught the junk mail folder if you wish. As far as getting email
messages from the list that you have to go through and pick and choose
what to read... Well IMO, anyone who has their list setting to send full
messages rather than list of messages with links to those messages you
find interesting is either masochistic or has way more time to play with
than I can imagine (there are of course other possibilities but I'm
thinking a flame war in here inappropriate).
