Hi Clayarters,
I am sure many of you have attended a NCECA. conference. I have never had the opportunity I live so far away and never have had the time but this year for some reason the itch to go is growing and I guess I am writing to see if anyone could give me a the little push I need to make those plane ticket reservations! In just a few words what is it that makes NCECA special or not? I am curious to see what is happening now in contemporary ceramics. Is there any other venue in the US that might also be interesting? I would love to hear anyones thoughts...
Karen

Dear Karen,
NCECA http://www.nceca.net/conference/2008/index.html
is a huge and overwhelming experience. Attendance varies lately for
4,000-5,000. There were only 500 in Greeley, Co. (dry county) in 1977
or 76.
I looked forward to it for decades as my only communications (pre
clayart) with others involved in Clay when I was teaching in a small
college.
There are many venues..local get togethers like www.nolafiredup.org ,
Potters Council http://ceramicartsdaily.org/potterscouncil/
NCECA will have an incredible number of exhibitions which you can not
see on the day of the bus tours. Maybe you'll get through one bus tour.
Then Thurs. and Friday is crammed of more than one activity ppre
time slot..many activities: technicals, historical, asthetic...all
designed to compliment the annual theme.
The trade sho can consume an entire day...vendors with all the latest
books, tools, equipment...
all the non-profits providing workshops, residencies and degrees.
Please attend NCECA if you are interested in the program, exhibitions,
etc.
If you think you'd get amore for your time invested in a smaller
venue , they also are available.
Clay people like to congregate..big and small gatherings. Take your
pick.

I went once when it was in Indy, near where I live and it was a wonderful
experience. You should go at least once! I found out things that I still
use, I got to be in two shows and met some fantastic people. Mel signed my
book!

DO IT!

Chuck in Rockville.
