RAKU WORKSHOP with John Kellum

Nationally known and award winning clay artist John Kellum will introduce
students to the Raku process with demonstrations and slides. Students will glaze
and fire their own bisqued pots in an all day kiln session on Sunday.
Originally, the title of Raku was granted to a single Japanese family of potters,
who removed their works from extremely hot kilns causing the glaze to cool,
shrink, and crack. Today's Raku techniques create optimal conditions for the
most beautiful and visible effects. John will demonstrate his speciality, the
copper matte glaze technique.

"First and foremost, I am a potter. I love sitting at my potter's wheel and
creating. The immediacy of the process and the contrast of a delicate pot
being put through a severe firing environment is what has drawn me to Raku. I
have a BFA in photography from the University of Bridgeport and have worked as a
graphic designer for over 15 years. "
