cone 8 matt black glaze

updated mon 7 jan 08

Smith, Judy on fri 4 jan 08

I am looking for a cone 8 matt or satin glaze to use on the lower 2
thirds of vases. The top third will be glazed with a cone 8 crystalline
glaze. The vase will be fired in oxidation. I found this glaze in the
archives. Will this glaze work or do I need to alter it to go down to
cone 8?

Thanks,

Judy Smith

Here's a recipe for a beautiful matt black. I used it years ago in cone
10=20
reduction. It has the most wonderful finish - more of semi matt leaning
to satin=20
rather than dry.=20

J.BOBBS MATT BLACK 10 REDUCTION OXIDATION=20

POTASH FELDSPAR 5584.8=20
WHITING 568.9=20
CHINA CLAY 1526.4=20

ADD: COBALT OXIDE 221.76, IRON OXIDE 253.5=20

Hi Judy,

You firing in oxidation or reduction?

I went through art college with Joan Bobbs - brings back lots of memories.

Even at cone 10 reduction the alumina is very high so the cobalt and iron
are helping to flux this glaze. I'll bet it's not fully melted - probably
not durable.

It would be better to find a cone 6 matte glaze and add some refractory -
I'll be happy to help.
