A few years ago I started using clear plexi-glass (plastic sheet) to cover
my glazing areas, etc. I also use a sheet for behind, around my wheel.

All you do is use regular plywood (cheap) paint it if you like, I painted
all of mine white as it is easy to see if it needs cleaning.

The problem with using any kind of wood tops, even if they are painted is
they remain absorbent and therefore difficult to clean. Plain old
plexi-glass which is brittle, but when glued to a wood backing with a clear
silicone it is virtually indestructible. I highly recommend this solution. I
personally will never again use another system. It is simple cheap and a
breeze to clean up. I especially love the piece I glued to the table behind
my wheel. On those days where you may have been interrupted while throwing
and had to leave it a mess when you come back a couple of squirts with a
water bottle and a plastic drywall scraper you're good to go. It is even
better than many of the manufactured tables as the plexi-glass is so smooth.

Anyways there you go that is what I have found works well for me, it's cheap
and will last forever.

You can cut it very easily with any rotary cutting tool. It will melt a bit
while cutting so you just draw your lines, curves, etc, with a sharpie and
keep the tool moving. If you are of the exceedingly safety conscious type
you can take it outside, I didn't because I knew that I was cutting it once
and would never exposed to it again. I found using other methods you often
ended up cracking it. If you decide to make one for your wheel it is a
simple matter to use your splash pan as the template for the round portion
of the cutout on the plywood then once the plywood is cut to your liking you
can lay the plexi on the plywood and put the splash pan on top of it and
draw your arc again making sure the two semi circles match. After you're
done you will have a perfect work surface for your wheel work.
