show review, interesting

updated sat 1 dec 07

this is a summary of review posted this week in the mpls tribune.
mary abbe is our most courageous art critic in minneapolis. she comes
right to the point...and i could not agree more. it is so refreshing to
find a critic that has the courage to confront this stupidity.

"Enough with the playpens. Artists have been=20
wallowing in them for decades, encouraged by art=20
schools, galleries, museums and collectors to=20
release their inner child, to express their=20
wanton wills and to liberate whatever little=20
thoughts and emotions might flit through their=20
little minds and souls. Well. Enough about you=20
and your whims, your neuroses, your flights of=20
fancy, your scribbles and drips and fun-with-the-trash.

Let's declare an end to navel-gazing,=20
sophomoricism, banality and self-indulgence.=20
Let's move on to something -- anything -- more=20
visually engaging and intellectually stimulating=20
than the dismal dreck that's showcased through=20
Feb. 3 in the Minnesota Biennial: 3D II at the=20
Minnesota Museum of American Art. "
this was the classic show of trash cans, stuff on the floor, old
garbage bags and metaphor about `self`.
it was dismal, just like many ceramic sculpture/pottery shows we have
to drag through.

she concludes her review with this:

"But this stuff is so hapless and sophomoric that=20
it should be a wakeup call to the museum if this=20
biennial is to continue. If more artists of=20
quality can't be persuaded to enter the event, it=20
should be scrapped rather than perpetuate the=20
impression that this appalling juvenilia=20
represents the state's best. It doesn't.

Pieces by Elisa Berry and Jeffrey Morrison hadn't=20
been installed during a preview tour. But=20
Minneapolis artist Ruben Nusz got the last word;=20
his sculpture is a garbage can filled with trash. "

The curator was named, along with many of the bad (as well as good) pieces.

>>>The art was chosen, from 147 entries, by guest curator Jennifer
>>>Jankauskas, an associate curator at the John Michael Kohler Arts Center

Wow, those could have been taken in my garage.
Maybe I'll advertise a new show!

In Homosassa with so much "art" I can't afford the tipping
fee.

Please excuse me if this offends anyone's sense of PC, but that "artist"
should be taken out to the woodshed and introduced to the Mayor's
2X4...Pronto. (quickly)
Actually, don't excuse me. If that comment offends you, that's just too
damn bad. That reaction is one of the reasons we have to suffer "art"
like that.

Best,
Wayne Seidl

Yeah, we occasionally have these shows at the art center where I work.
I call them "HCLS" pieces: High Concept, Low Skill"...
The most irritating to me was a piece involving concrete blocks
gradually squashing real oranges against very nice wooden boxes. What a
waste! Waste of space, waste of time, waste of materials, total lack of
respect for the materials. Beautiful gallery space being used for drivel.
The organization is proud of the fact that the gallery shows are
supported by grants, that they show work that's non-commercial. To my
mind, it's fine to support work that's not necessarily sellable, but
does that mean it doesn't have to be well-made?

Pat (proud to be a functional potter) Colyar, who thinks that if the
whole space were used to sell well-crafted functional ceramics, they
wouldn't need to hustle for grants....

Not if I don't get to it first. The sad thing is that people who view
these garbage actually believe it's the new wave of art.Wonder how many
of them shelled out big bucks for that.Let me really help you with that

On my gawd. I cleaned out my clay dripped trash cans today. Do you mean I
destroyed some valuable artwork. On well. Cest la vie! LOL

Logan:
If you spin your way to the curb, holding the cans in arms outstretched,
wearing a feather boa and 12 inch heels, singing some form of aria in
Cantonese
that might be considered a performance art piece, wouldn't it?
Especially when you trip....Weeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!

Wasn't it Andy Warhol once said "Art is whatever you can get away with."?

That might be ok for some higher thinkers,
but when I see a trash can with crap in it, my first impulse is to empty it
no matter what it's called. And then change the liner.

Go back and look at the installation photo again.
Was the missing electrical wall outlet cover simply a violation of the
local electrical code for the gallery,
or was it "making a statement about the emptiness of function as
compared to the trashy art in the can..." etc.

Oh please...excuse me while I go wretch...preferably in that trash can .

I've also wondered if my parking my car on my front lawn is expressing
my artistic expression about society's class system. Hell, put them on
cinder blocks and it becomes even more profound! Kathryn in NC

Logan -
No, in that case they're just garbage cans on the curb. You'd have to put
them on the steps of city hall in order for them to be public art. If you
could have someone video the part where you get arrested and hauled off to
jail for desecrating the steps of city hall, it would be performance art as
well. Let us know how it all turns out.
