Hi Lois!

I recently found out about the lack of gold (and platinum) lusters
when I tried to order it. This is what I've found out:

Duncan was apparently supplied by Hanovia so they are no longer
selling either gold or platinum. Colorobbia makes a variety of golds
and platinum along with color lusters; If you are looking for an N
gold equivalent, make sure that the gold you get from them is their
highest percentage (they make three different percentages). In the
tri-state area there is a small company called Sara Lusters-- I've
tried their gold, which is beautiful; I'm assuming that the platinum
is similar quality. They were very nice and sold me a 2 gm bottle to
try (same price as Hanovia).

I'm in temporarily good shape because a friend had a 25 gm bottle of
N gold that she didn't want, and I bought it from her. This has just
delayed the inevitable, however. It seems that most supply companies
will probably be selling Colorobbia, simply because it's widely
available; I didn't much like it, but I'm not sure that what I was
sent (from a supplier out west who was clueless) was the highest gold
percentage. If it was, I'll be buying mine from Sara Lusters.

I hope this was helpful!
Lynn

Now that I have bought up about all the Hanovia platinum luster I could
find...does anyone know who else is making platinum luster? I know that
Duncan is making Gold, but not platinum.

If anyone out there knows of anyone who has some Hanovia platinum (#05)
luster they'd like to sell, please contact me off list. I contacted the
majority of large and readily known stockists, but fingers crossed someone
out there might know of a local ceramic supplier that has some. I have also
be researching china painting suppliers and glass decorating folks, but to
no avail.

Lastly, if all else fails, is it possible to *make* luster? I'm guessing
the china manufacturers make their own. Anyone have a buddy at Lenox? ;-)

I know, I know...don't get attached to a hard-to-find material, but wow -
Hanovia just sort of went "poof", and no one seems to be picking up the
ball.

Hi Lois, all...

Why not make your own?

Seems like it would be fun, interesting, and, allow far more flexibility and
value...and discovery...!

Hi Marci,

As I recall, the email didn't work for me when I did my initial
search. (I told them, and they were all "huh... really? We need to
fix that." I guess they didn't.) Try the phone number; you can also
fax to that number. The company seems to be a small, family
operation-- they may not always be in the office.

RE: Platinum:
Dont know if you have tried some of the china painting suppliers .but
Rynne China has it in their catalog: http://www.rynnechina.com/p57.html

You can also try Maryland China www.marylandchina.com and
Dallas China ( formerly Mr and Mrs of Dallas 0 www.Dallaschina.com
I also had heard that Reusche had bought out
Hanovia and was going to be reproducing their lusters but word
I have now is that they are working on a line of lusters
( no confirmation as to whether these will be the Hanovia
formulas or not and no word on when they will be available.. )
Also, has anybody actually had any luck getting in touch with the
folks from Sara lusters? Man, I cant get through to anybody over there!

I have found that, just because it's in the catalog, it isn't necessarily in
stock.

In fact, all the leads I was sent off-list turned up nil. Not to be
discouraging, but it really is important to find another stockist if one
wants to use lusters.

As for the people who bought out Hanovia - I was wondering about that.
Hopefully they will begin to produce. Lusters are used by china painters
and glass artists as well. The big china manufacturers make their own.

...lo
who fears the weak dollar will also make lusters out of reach
