Shipping is also too expensive on the East Coast. I did an order with
them (they do not show you shipping with the order) and then found out
that the shipping was more than the order.

Yes, that is the one. They changed owners last year. Our crafts studio
put in an order for a smooth white stoneware cone 6 to use for throwing
and without clearing it with anyone, Ceramic Supply switched the order to
what felt like a raku clay or a clay meant for scultures. It was white.
It was certainly not meant for throwing. The only good thing about
Ceramic Supply is that if you have a large enough order, they do not
charge for shipping. If I could find another supplier that would do the
same, I would go with them. Donna

This seems an opportune time to put this out to everyone:

A friend of mine who owns a "paint-a-pot" business ordered cobolt
oxide for a customer who never came to get it. My friend is selling a
5 pound bag (unopened) for $150 plus shipping. She's been hanging on
to this stuff for a couple of years because she didn't know what to
do with it (the supplier wouldn't take it back) and she's ready to be
rid of it.

If you want the cobolt, please contact me off-list.

Latest we had was $24. Tin is nuts, though.

Best source we've found is US Pigments in IL. They advertise in CM.
Excellent and consistent quality.

If what you are referring to is that Ceramic Supply of NY/NJ is asking 3x
more than the other suppliers.....

They are extremely overpriced in many areas. They're also real good with the
bait and switch - a week after I got my new catalog, they more than doubled
the price for magnesium carbonate without a word.

I am in Brooklyn, have been using them for years, and am actively looking
for another supplier in the area for clay and chemicals. I don't use them
for very much else anymore. Damn shame for them - I go through 2 tons of
clay a year, and am now testing Laguna bodies so I can switch suppliers.

They are owned by Standard Ceramic now, but the service continues to get
worse, with a turnover of 4 owners in 10 years. Each more inept than the
last.

Have you tried Baileys? Their prices seem reasonable and consistent. If i wasn't out on the west coast, i'd transact with them more often, but shipping is too expensive.

Clay is the cheapest part of doing pottery. I never understand the
reluctance to get what you want. I buy clay from Texas because I love
the clay. I get the results I want. I buy 5000 lbs. at a time. I live
in Michigan. Michigan has a good clay supplier called Rovin that
makes a beautiful white stoneware similar to B-mix. they are good and
reliable. Located in Taylor, Mi. If I wanted a white stoneware I'd
buy from them.

I have no problem with the clay I'm using, which is Standard #551. I love
it.

the problem stems from not being able to store 5000 of clay. I order
between 750 - 1000 lbs at a time, depending on my production cycle. Ah, the
disadvantages to being a city potter. I would love to store a couple tons -
then I'd also have control over it's aging. With the amounts I order, it
would be cost prohibitive to ship. Likewise, I don't think another
distributor would ship me Standard clay, as Ceramic Supply is our local
Standard dealer. This means I'd have to switch to a Laguna body (I'm
testing Miller's #15 and #16 as we speak).

The purpose would be to avoid dealing with Ceramic Supply. I was told that
one of the owners is out of the country, and the other one works out of
Pittsburgh. If anyone has suggestions about dealing with them, that would
be great.

After many years of owner neglect and turnover, higher prices, worse
service, poor inventory, I think I am really just tired of dealing with
them. Regardless of the fact that I spend thousands with them a year, they
haven't been very proactive about dealing with ME, which is peeving.

Bottom line is, I am paying 110% more for some stuff than I was a year ago -
if they even have it in stock.

If you want, call Don at Clayscapes. I researched cobalt because I
needed it and yep, Baileys shipping was too high, Ceramic Supply was too
expensive. Don's price was low, I think $24 or $29 a pound and he is
very reasonable on shipping. Their website is:

www.clayscapespottery.com

Don and Shawn are great to deal with!

I would agree that Don at Clayscapes in Syracuse is great to deal with.
However, I just ordered cobalt from them three weeks ago and paid $25 per
pound for the carbonate and $35 per pound for the oxide.
I would think that whomever brought up the weak dollar as regards to
imported materials (cobalt, I believe, is brought in from overseas) is right
on the money, so to speak.
Best,
