Macs don't need no virus software. Well, maybe they will someday. But
as of now, though they have estimates ranging up to 10% of the
market, Macs have about 0% of the viruses. It's just no fun to write
a virus for a secure Unix variant. Although a Trojan was recently
spotted in the wild (stay away from porn plug-ins, any which way).

And I'd hate to be smug about something that could potentially happen
if the kiddies wanted it to, though Apple is pretty responsive to
notifications of exploits and proof of concept viruses and things,
they can be arrogant too and have been known to avoid good advice or
criticism.

If you have a Mac, ClamXav is the product you want, similar to
Grisoft's AVG. Sophos is good too, especially for a large organization.

If you regularly handle a lot of Windows Office Documents emailed to
you, they may have various opportunistic Macro viruses and you could
unwillingly be a carrier if you don't protect your computer. Go to
Mactopia on Microsoft's site and learn how to disable importing
macros. Or use NeoOffice or OpenOffice, free open source and will
open all MS Office files without the tariffs.

Just be careful using Virus software around Microsoft Entourage. If
ClamXav quarantines an email containing a PC virus, it will
quarantine your entire Entourage Mail Database. Do not empty trash in
that case! Locate offending email and delete manually.

Please don't ask me how I know, or do! Though I wasn't didn't empty
the loaded Quarantine folder I had to clean up the wiped email
afterwards because the triple backup system I had put in place and
was responsible for had some soft spots that I wasn't aware of and I
felt badly and had to make good on it.

If you have a PC and wonder why you'd want to change from McAfee or
Norton which came free with your computer or arrived at your home or
office in a nicely packaged box, check out this article: http://

yep, I have used it for yrs, free, works easily, updates easily and
automatically, my son is a programmer and computer teckky and that is
what he recommends. We also use ad-aware and spybot for those pesky
trackers...have to scan and delete those out every couple weeks depending
on how much surfing you do.

Running AV software on macs typically causes tons of problems and
provides no protection to the mac user. The AV software might
prevent you from forwarding windows viruses to others via email, but
the amount of headaches you'll deal with on your own machine outweigh
the headaches you'll save windows users through your altruism.
Besides, windows users are used to malware.
