I have a Peter Pugger VPM 20 that is 6 years old. Last used last spring =
sometime, it's just been sitting until today when I decided to loosen up =
some bagged clay I was throw. It will mix and pug, but when =
I turn the vacuum on, it only gets up to 10lbs of pressure. I have =
cleaned the seal over the hopper and over the vacuum chamber, also =
checked the nose cover. Any ideas? Keep in mind that I'm not =
mechanically inclined.....

Thanks

Lisa:
You mean that it only gets down to 10 inches of mercury, not up to 10
pounds of pressure. The usual is around 25, IIRC.
Try this.
Inspect the cover of each, the hopper and the vacuum chamber. Look
closely at the seals for any signs of compression or
what I call "denting" in the seals. If anything appears to be "dented"
rub vigorously with your finger to try to restore it to flat and not
dented. You might rub just a bit of vegetable oil on the rubber
seals. Not a lot (!!), just enough to recondition them a little, that
might help.

Also, inside the vacuum chamber, make sure the area around the shaft
(where it comes through the wall) is
clean. That's where the air is pulled from the mixing chamber through
to the vacuum chamber.
The last things to check are the connections and hoses from the vacuum
motor to the chamber. Something might have a cut, or a loose clamp.
You can check by using the same method as plumbers looking for pressure
leaks. While the vacuum pump motor is on, spray a solution of soapy
water on each of the connections. Watch the vacuum gauge as you do
this. An increase in vacuum while doing this on any particular
connection (even temporary) shows where there is a problem that has to
be tightened or replaced.
Lastly, check the filter gizmo (looks like a glass or clear plastic
bowl) that drains the water out. Make sure it's clean and tight.

Best,

A while back my Peter Pugger couldn't build up a vacuum. I performed all=
the
recommended appropriate actions, I even called the Peter Pugger people wh=
o are
very responsive, and it still couldn't develop a vacuum. I was seriously=

upset, I hate to wedge by hand. Turned out that one of the bolts holding=
the
nose cone to the body had loosened slightly and air was leaking in at tha=
t
point. A couple of turns with a socket wrench and I was back in business=
=2E =

I'm ashamed to admit that it took my husband to figure it out.
