Hello Sandi,

I'm sorry for your loss, and can understand that you want to complete thi=
s=20
piece of pottery.

If you know where she was working with clay and could contact them and fi=
nd=20
out what kind of clay they were using, that would be good. But I would on=
ly=20
be confident in what they said if, for instance, it was a school situatio=
n=20
and the same instructor is there and said "We have always used only high=20
fire clay", etc., or "We have always used only low fire clay."

But failing that, or if it's not possible to research that line, I would=
=20
fire it only to about ^05, earthenware temp. using low fire glazes. If =
it=20
really is high-fire clay, the absorption rate will be high, as you probab=
ly=20
know. But better safe than sorry.

Good luck with it,
Ann Brink in Lompoc CA

Hello everyone. I=92m probably going to ask an =93impossible=94 question=

My daughter was killed a few years ago. We stored all of her belongings=

I just now have been able to go through and sort out things and came acro=

a very nice piece of bisque ware I found her initials on and the year she
must have made it. It looks like a hand-built chip and dip serving dish.=
I
have no idea what kind of clay she built this from, so don=92t know how t=

pick a glaze to finish the piece of pottery for her. It really means a l=

Thank you for any suggestions, Sandi

Sandi,
Do you know where your daughter did her pottery work? If it was in a group studio, someone there might know. Or you could try just using a very forgiving low fire glaze (cone 04 or so).

Sandi,

If I were you I would leave the piece your daughter made alone and not
glaze it. That was the way she left it and it is part of her past. It
will always remind you of her when she made the piece. I have bisqued
"Rabbits" of Ken Ferguson that was the result of a bisque firing
blow-up, Dave Shaner shards, etc. My son has pots from workshops by
Ah-Leon etc. and he keeps them as he got them. Those pots and shards
mean as much to me as the beautiful jars, cheese dishes that I own by
Dave. Not to butt in, but I think I would just keep your daughters pot
the way it was when she last touched it. The memory is of her not of
someone who could potentially do something to the pot that she didn't
do.

Regards,

Bill Merrill
