sticking handles on dry greenware [byrd]

John,

I do this all this time - dry to dry. First I make up some moderately
stiff slip, and use "magic water" in the mix. I put a piece of high rag
paper towel over the spot where the pieces attach. Then I soak the paper
in "Magic Water". after the contact surfaces are fully wetted, I apply a
bit of slip to the contact surfaces, the push together. It works most
every time. It even works on non-similar clays, like attaching B-mix
pottery clay to B-mix casting slip.

In Jingdezhen in particular in China, greenware (porcelain) is
totally air-dried before being trimmed (Ceramics Monthly had an
article on this recently). Obviously, handles and similar things
must be applied after trimming. Does anyone know exactly what
they do to stick handles on so that they stay attached through
firing? (I've been trying slip of various densities, with and
without scoring, and with and without sodium silicate, with a lot
of failures.)
