Joan,

I would contact the FBI. They are trained to deal with terroristic
threats, and (what is probably the case here) fraud. Good luck--
please keep us informed.

Joan,

I received an email from this person in the past few days. I did not open
it - just deleted it. I'm glad I did.

I don't know anything to do other than what you've already done.

This evening I received a threatening email in which "Santa Marin"
claims that he has been paid to "terminate" me. He claims to have pity for
me and will not carry out the contract if I agree to meet him, but first I
must pay him $6000. He warns that if I contact the police, or tell anyone
(including my husband) he will be forced to kill me. The message was sent
to "Recipient List Suppressed". Did anyone else on the list get such a
message ?- I do not have much email interaction with others, other than
Clayart. What to do? My husband called the local police who gave him the
telephone number of the local "Counter Terrorism" group. No one answers the
phone there
- it seems they are closed for the weekend - big comfort there too. Oh for
the good old days of the straight ahead Nigerian scam.

I got it too. But there's no use putting ANY effort or thought into
these things! You have to figure they are all scams. Delete and
forget. Even the ones that seem to come from your own bank.
Too bad it's come to this..

The goal of that email is to steal your money and, if that
fails, to at least frighten you. If you are frightened, the
sociopath who wrote the email has achieved his goal and won.

That's why I try not to get annoyed with spam. The goal is
to steal money and, failing that, to at least anger us. I
don't want them to win.

Thank you to everyone who responded to my somewhat neurotic message
of yesterday - both on and off list. Clayarters are such a nice,
warm, supportive group of people. Since some people asked to be
informed of the outcome - my husband phoned the local FBI office and
they recognized the scam. A warning about just this message is
posted on their website
http://www.fbi.gov/cyberinvest/escams.htm. There they say "If you
have experienced this situation, please notify your local, state, or
federal law enforcement agency immediately. Also, please notify the
IC3 by filing a complaint at www.ic3.gov." We did as we were told
but, being a morning person, I must admit that I wasn't as freaked
out this morning as I was last night, and in addition there were all
those nice comforting messages from Clayart. I did notice that all
of the people who say they received the message, both on and off
list, were women, I guess we are seen as more vulnerable. Since the
scam has been around since December of 2006 finding the creep(s)
responsible doesn't seem too promising.

Thanks again,

Joan Klotz.

I also received the threatening email from an "Italian citizen" who was contracted for $45,000 to assassinate me. He had only been paid $25,000 and was due $20,000. He wanted to meet me to see why his employers wanted me killed.

I read this email while I was on vacation in Italy. At first I was a bit disturbed, but realized he was in America. Then I was insulted that I was only worth $45,000. I also felt he should contact all of my Nigerian friends who are offering me billions and in fact just the other day I WON the Spanish Lottery (along with many other lotteries in the UK). And, just who are those people who have me in their will....

Our emails are culled from the internet from any discussion list you may belong to. I have since changed my email address for my friends. This email address is the only one to receive the spam and lately there has been an awful lot.

And, while my husband and I were in Italy (apparently avoiding my personal assassin) I DID visit Tuscany and I DID visit La Meridiana - I'm saving up for a workshop. It is an undescribable region.

It's funny - the Royal Palace of Jordan stopped calling me after we did a
search on the US lawyer who contacted me (as their agent). My husband is a
lawyer, and has access to various legal databases.

Funny - the lawyer's website seems to have been taken down, and no one
answers their phone anymore.

FWIW, I understand totally. I was really freaked out when one of them
called me on the phone. From overseas. A lot.

I am used to the spams, the scams, know not to click on any links...and yet,
there is such a thin line that is crossed when the scammer makes it
personal.

I received a threatening email this morning from william1111@live.com
threatening to kill me if I didn't pay $30,000. From the poor English
and stupidity of the writing, it's probably from out of the country.

Did anyone on CLAYART get the same thing?

Heard about this one on NPR, It is a scam!

The scam artist sends the e-mail or letter to the target stating that he or
she has been hired to kill the person for reasons that the scam artist will
not reveal. The scam artist claims to have been stalking them for some
period of time, suggesting that they know about their daily movements. This,
of course, could frighten any person considerably. The sender of the letter
(scam artist) then claims that he or she has decided not to follow through
with the contract to kill. Rather, the sender claims to want to help the
victim by giving the victim a taped conversation where the sender of the
letter agreed to kill the victim.

The scam artist urges the victim to use this tape as evidence to prosecute
the unknown individual who hired the killer (who is really the scam artist).
The unknown individual who hired the killer (who is really the scam artist).
The scam artist offers to deliver the taped conversation once a down payment
has been made. The press release does not indicate what kind of payment is
being demanded by these scammers. It is probably safe to assume that the
amount varies depending on the perceived level of wealth of the targeted
victim. This demand of payment is often followed by another message through
e-mail or regular mail that reprimands the victim for contacting law
enforcement and threatens to follow through with the killing. This second
message gives the victim one last chance to comply with the payment demand.

Good luck

Arthur

I got it too, but don't immediately blame Clayart. There are lots of other
sources for email addresses.

I found the concept of issuing a death threat via email (and, of course
providing an email return address for you to respond) somewhat amusing.
Unfortunately, there will be those who won't know how ridiculous such a
thing is.

It would be good for this one to be reported to authorities, but I'm not
sure where to start with that. Since it's being distributed throughout the
country, probably the FBI is the proper place. Anyone out there in law
enforcement? What is the proper action?

Some spam artists have contacts who live in the U.S. and who
can actually show up on your doorstep. This could be
dangerous. But this would happen only if you opened the spam
and replied.

Criminals send out the same threatening letter to thousands
if not millions and await a response. You are perfectly safe
as long as you delete the message without opening, let alone
replying. Also, set your email system on "text only."

Because I've read email for so long, I can spot a spam
almost instantly just by the subject line. I'm sure most on
Clayart have the same ability.

I received this spam about 6 months ago on my other email addy. I figured it
was spam but it scared me so I called the police. A local officer came over
and took a look and agreed that it is spam. It has been tracked to somewhere
in the middle east (can't remember right now where exactly) but then they
lost it.
Unfortunately this spam cost one local elderly man about $36,000. He sent
the initial amount then kept being asked for more and more. Finally he or
someone near him woke up and called the cops. He is out that money - gone.
I have not received it again since but will delete it right away if I do.
The police officer who spoke to my husband and I said we should worry when
the email contains specifics (address, kids' names, what you look like -
that sort of stuff). Otherwise it is just too general and just a scam.

Yeah, Arthur,

It's obviously a scam--I was just wondering if it slimed in on the
tails of CLAYART or Comcast or somewhere else.

It's too utterly stupid to be believed. ;)

One thing that puts the lie to the scam is the demand for $30,000.

From a potter?

Really?!

I searched and found something talking about this email from Hungary:

http://dansdata.blogsome.com/2008/02/04/i-bet-my-aunt-called-in-the-hit/

If you take a string from the message, you get over 500,000 hits:

Don't take it personal. Don't answer. Just delete.
