i think in your case, the kiln did not have a proper
metal bracing sytem.

when a free stacked kiln is built, the frame, or
bracing is critical.
often it is no more then bed frame angle iron, but when
welded in place it keeps the kiln tight.
it will expand a fraction during firing, but then goes
right back in place.

i have built several small kilns that did not have
any welding on them...i used aircraft cable, and turnbuckles.
the advantage was that i could just tighten the turnbuckles
to tune up the kilns tightness.
