axner arm anyone?

I am considering buying a centering arm to center large amounts of
clay, but am concerned about the use of it. I normally use the weight
of my torso to move the clay and I push the clay with my right hand
into my left hand (my left hand is the "wall" that i push against with
my right hand). Centering large amounts of clay puts a lot of strain
on my wrists, and was looking for some relief. By looking at the
video from the axner people, it seems that the woman uses her right
hand to hold the arm and uses her left hand to push the clay. It seems
incredibly easy, but it seems it is opposite of how I center.

I wondered if anyone has ever used this device and can comment on
using it as a centering device.

Thanks.
Claudia

Claudia,

I use the Axner power arm to both center and as a jiggering device. I use
it to center because of age...arthritis etc. The right hand pushes the
centering plate into the side of the clay thus doing most of the work. The
left hand keeps the clay from spiraling up past the top of the plate so most
of the left hand pressure, which isn't much, is on top of the clay. It
works well for me although I only use the plate designed for 6-10 pounds and
have no experience with the one that is used to center up to 25 pounds or
more. Like anything else, it requires a little practice.

Claudia

I have not used one but I installed one for a friend of mine on her wheel.
She is in her 70's and had a broken wrist, so she needed something to help
badly. She absolutely loves her's and says she wishes she had purchased one
years ago. If no one responds that has one let me know and I will give you
her email.

Hope this helps.
