I make udu drums. I use stoneware, bisque to ^06 and then smoke fire and
wax. They sound great so I don't think it's necessary to use earthenware.

Every now & again I make musical instruments, and I have found that using a
cone 10 stoneware & doing a cone 04 salt firing on it seems to work really
well. I know others that do a low (cone 06/08) bisque & then pit fire their
work & those work well.
