Hi All,
I am contemplating doing a sagar firing in my Raku kiln. I have =
never tried sagar before but wanted to try it before investing in a kiln =
just for that purpose. Do you think there would be any adverse effects =
on the Raku firings if I use the same kiln for both?
Thanks for your input.

I use my raku kiln as my only kiln for saggar firings as well as
raku. Whywould you invest in a kiln solely for saggar firing?
I had 3 raku kilns I left in Montana. I have one raku kiln now and
material to build several more.

No reason why you couldn't use your raku kiln for saggar firing, though I
would suggest you slow down the firing time and don't try firing raku &
saggar at the same time - saggar firing should be fired at a lower
temperature if you have decorated the pottery with terra sig.

Diane
I work at a small community college and we do sagar firings in our gas raku
kilns and I have not seen any adverse affects on our kilns. We have both
soft brick and fiber raku kilns and we do tin foil, paper bag and potted
sagars.If you are using an electric kiln I don't think I would recommend it;
the chemicals will eat up your elements.
Good Luck

Hi Marcia,
I remember someone telling me awhile ago even though they are in a sagar
that the salts and other chemicals used would effect the later Raku firings.
My Raku kiln is a old converted electric. I have another in the shed I could
use with little investment using the same burner of course. I would like to
just use the same one-much easier, if it doesn't change the outcome.
Thanks for your advise,
Diane

Donna,
I use saggars made of thrown pots made of my raku paper clay. I use
cupric chloride, and other salts and chemicals as well. I have not
determined any ill effects from using the kiln for both techniques.
My kilns are made of fiber and ITC coated.
