Not to fuel the fire, may I suggest a nice little book called
"The Nature and Art of Workmanship" by David Pye,
ISBN 0 521 29356 1? He was a professor of Furniture Design
at the Royal College of Art, in London.

He has reframed this question as the difference between
the workmanship of risk and the workmanship of certainty.
So in otherwords do you risk screwing things up anywhere
along the way or is your outcome more guaranteed. So
writing with a pen versus using a printer.

Probably out of print, my copy is a paperback. When
I checked _www.isbn.nu_ (http://www.isbn.nu) I found only hard covers.
Check your local library.
