saggar firing cobalt

Hi,
Can anyone tell me please roughly what sort of temp. you would have to =
fire a sealed saggar in order to volatize cobalt oxide ?
I cant find the info in any books I have, they only mention copper, and =
the archives mention it but dont specify any temps.
Thanks.

Dear Pat Southwood,=20

I calculate the minimum temperature for evaporation from the solid to be =
about 950 deg C but the yield would be insignificant.

To get a Cobalt compound that would evaporate rapidly I suggest you =
employ Cobalt Chloride. This would be available from a Wholesale =
Chemical Supplier. The solid melts at 740 deg C and boils at 1049 deg C. =
So above Cone 04 you should be able to saturate the saggar atmosphere =
with a Cobalt rich gas.

If Chromium changes from Green to Red, I wonder what Cobalt blue will =
change to when it settles on a white tin glaze. Just speculating ! ! !

Hope your trials are successful.

Best regards,

Ivor Lewis.

I have used a lttile cobalt sulfate and it will volatilize much lower
than cobale oxide.
I fire my saggars to 1600 F. and include salts in the concoction.

Hi Pat,

Hamer says it's unaffected by oxidation or reduction and is not volatile
even at 1400C.

I don't think you are going to get it to move.
