glazes - thin - thick

Hi:
I am normally a lurker but I have a puzzle I would like help with.
I have a question about glaze application. I stir my bucket of glaze. It is
well-mixed yet the glaze is thin. I let it sit for 5 minutes and re-stir and
it has thickened up. I stir again and let it sit for another 5-10 minues and
it has thickened up more.

There must be some basic chemical principal at work here. This does not
happen with all glazes but with enough different ones to know it is not
limited to one set of ingredients.

I fire to cone 6 and use many glazes in combination - one glaze over top of
another. Sometimes I want a glaze thick for a single coat application and
other times I want a glaze thin for coating on top of another glaze. Maybe I
can use the phenomenon noted above - I can dip a pot early - at the first
mixing when the glaze is still thin if I want to have a double dip?

I hope this is clear. What is happening?

Many thanks.
