(hand-built vessels and sculptural forms range that range from 1 foot
(30 centimeters) to 20 feet (6 Meters) in height.)
> I'm intrigued with objects that hold life... the shell of the hermit crab,
> the cocoon of the butterfly, the human body. Over the layers of time,
> they hold the story of the life that resides within. The vessels remain
> as life moves on, leaving their stories behind. (...)
> My work incorporates techniques such as pit-firing, stains, oxides
> and slips that create a timeless and ancient-look. Both ceramic and
> non-ceramic finishes have also been incorporated to complete the story.
(Note that Burton twice uses the word "story" in this short artist's
statement.)
(Also, though I have not quoted this part, she mentions in her statement
that she is both a writer and a sculptor.)
(Her "wrapped" figural pieces have writing on them, but the writing
becomes part of the design.)
(pit-fired decorated vessels are one of her specialties.)

Sara Baker (Unityville, PA, USA)

(potter and husband, Oren Helbok, woodworker "Carving Out a Life in
Ceramics"
(Well, to me, re-using plastic bags is a good thing; using a car for as
long as possible is a good thing, despite the lower fuel efficiency.)
(I have much more difficulty however in agreeing with sending one's
children to private schools of any kind, rather than making certain that
excellent public education is provided for all children in our society.
The way I see it, ever larger segments of that society are relegated
to the decaying corners of long-ignored urban (and more recently,
suburban areas of many cities.) (I'm very "middle class" Canadian, and
most uncomfortably, I find myself in the position of having to say:
"Some of my best friends have sent their children to private schools.)

Catherine Lee (Wimberley, TX, USA and New York, NY, USA):
