alisa's glaze format

Many thanks to Alisa C. for the way glazes are shown on her website.
First, there is a grouping by some common denominator (color, texture
etc.). Selecting a group displays a tiny thumbnail of the glaze. Mousing
over a thumbnail shows a larger image of the glaze. CLicking the
thumbnail opens a window with the recipe, notes etc. for printing AND a
small reference image to boot!

Very orderly, visual, effective and informative! The best I've seen.
Nicely done...

Hope you do not mind my chiming in here to say how appreciative I am of all
that Alisa does and shares. Alisa, you are amazing. I cannot believe the number
of tests you do. I am constantly astounded at your energy! Thanks for sharing
all this wonderful information.

Dear Fred,
Thank you for your positive words. Also Veena!

There are undoubtedly many others who make glaze tests, as much as I do, an=
d
more.
I think, my success in presenting the information in a way that people can
use, lies in exactly what you experienced on my website. That makes me ver=
y
happy.

The information is in pretty much consistent, and in straight forward
format. I am like that so it is just a reflection of myself!
As time goes on, some things change, as now I am able to add Unity format.
I am privately, now publically, a little proud of my newest development.

A while back, I had an idea, sort of also my dream, of how I could put
together a website that resembled my own glaze test notes. I wanted to hav=
e
an "electronic" glaze notebook on a website. Exactly like my notes, just
chapters by color or texture.

I had the idea and the information, but needed the next most important
factor. A very clever webmaster. Her name is Gail Phillips. I remember
when we started this project, Gail wrote to me one day "did you just send m=
e
37 emails?"!

In the beginning it was a lot of work for both of us to get the information
out and organized. Gail is a genius. She could make my glaze test pages
exactly like I had imagined, in "Chapters".

I think it is reasonable to categorize glazes by color because that is
visual and that is what a website is also. Then, as you click through the
glazes, you get more and more information on each individual test.

One day, it will all be really consistent, as far as the information in bot=
h
weight and unity, but that takes the time it takes.

Finally, it is difficult to read through tests that are written like novel
literature, because the important information is all over the place.

For my own sake, I needed to make a format for my glaze tests that I could
easily for myself as well as my readers, so that we can always expect to
find the needed information in about the same place in the reports.

Gail Phillips made all of this work and I have the glaze note book I have o=
n
my site, because Gail is excellent in her website work.

I am very pleased that it all works together and it helps people get
information that they can use.

Best regards from Alisa in Denmark

Alisa:

I hope my continuing comments do not embarass you. However, I have more
to say, and I decided to say it publically instead of privately because I
believe there is something significant here in your model.

I have quietly done the usual glaze testing most potters do, and have also
eagerly sought out others' testing results. Unfortunately, for all the
wonderful testing that has been done "out there," and for all the glaze
recipes posted online, only a tiny bit is useful to the rest of us.
Glazing is a very visual endeavor. Leaving out the visual dimension
pretty much forces those who see the written descriptions -- but no visual
description -- to start over and rerun the tests themselves if they want
to try the glaze. Sadly, much good exchange of discovery is lost because
of this.

I would not be surprised to see your format on adopted
by others. It is a glaze tester's dream, and I commend you and your web
consultant for doing it. The truth is, I only regret that I didn't think
of it first. I have never published any of my test results because I
didn't have a good idea in mind. Now I do. With your blessing, and the
time to do so, maybe I'll take a shot at it using your approach...

Thanks again for breaking new ground.

I forgot to add one important note. Although for me it goes unsaid, I
will say it in this exchange of notes:

Yes, I like my format or I would not use it. But I am not, not,
promoting that it is the format we all should use. Let us not go
back there. It is the format I use because I think it is clear and
those who agree may certainly use the format. Those who have there own
formats and like, will continue as they wish.

Best regards from Alisa

Hi Fred
It is a good format and I have nothing against you or anyone else using
it, because it works well. I will take credit for the glaze work and
idea/dream, and I will give credit to Gail for making it work as a
website. Sometimes an idea or dream is only as good as bringing it to
fruition.

Get in touch with Gail Phillips, she is a busy person, and see if she can
do the same for you.

Alisa and Gail... you both deserve high fives and KUDOS for all you've done! Great job... both of you!!! I too was totally impressed with the way your glaze tests were presented on your web site Alisa... so easy to access and assimilate... awesome! Thanks for sharing all of that hard work with the clay community.

I hope that someday I'll be able to set up my tests in a similar fashion, if anything... just to keep myself organized and from getting confused. I always knew Gail was a whiz with computers since we first met... and it doesn't surprise me that she's such an awesome webmaster as well... and Alisa... after getting to know you this last March in Louisville during NCECA there's only one thing I have to say... "you're the bomb" girl! You rock!

Warm wishes,
