Warning: incoming flack : :O)
Hi Lela ( and other slip casting poo-poo-ers ) ,
Then what of slip casted pieces that are altered? Manipulated, cut
apart, added to ..........one of a kind....
There ARE people out there ( I am one of them ) who do consider clay
as canvas . I have started making my own porcelain pieces because I
got tired of using commercially available forms for overglazing and I
wanted to do something that totally expressed me.
I ( I can hear the gasps
) :O) use commercial clear glaze on forms either handbuilt from
Laguna Frost or from vase forms that I slipcast and alter ....At this
point ( and after over 30 years in the overglaze game) , I dont have
the time to spend 5 years learning to throw porcelain forms that Im going
to change anyway nor do I have the place to set up a wheel if I wanted
to . I also dont have the time to muck around mixing and testing
100 clear glaze recipes...
I slip cast vase shapes and then push , pull , cut , add to those
shapes so that the result is a one of a kind piece... It is then glazed
with a commercial clear glaze and from there, I embellish in a
painterly fashion with chinapaint, lusters, fused-on glass ,
raised textures, gold, fiberglass..........
So, where does this stand on the " original " chart? If you contend
that slipcasting is unoriginal and therefore unacceptable, I contend
that making 300 pots or mugs with the same glaze on them that all look
alike also smacks of unoriginality . I think the whole argument
is disingenuous and any exclusion that does not take individual pieces
into account but makes a blanket statement is doing a disservice.
Eg: in the overglaze field, use of commercial decals is considered
to be not original..however Garth Johnson uses them as a tool to create
some VERY original work..
You all may look at my work and call it crap......but DONT call
it unoriginal !..
By the way , the pieces on my website are all still pieces that
were done on commercially available porcelain .. I dont have any of
the handbuilt and cast/altered stuff up there yet..

Hi Marci,
From your description of your process, your work sounds `original`
to me. I have a friend, my travel partner` who finds little plumbing
and hardware do-dads, casts them and incorporates into her
sculpture..some wonderful results.

I even bought a little slip cast sheep when we were in Germany
simply because it`s so darn `cute`.
My issue is the passing off of slip cast domestic ware as
`handmade`. The customer presumes thrown or handbuilt. It is not
as strong so does not hold up as well in a regular kitchen.

The only `original` is the first handmade piece that is cast in the mold.
Maybe my issue is more about honesty than process.

If slip cast is what a person enjoys doing, fine! But they should be
up front with their customers. I don`t exactly poo-poo slip casting, nor did
I make the `no molds allowed` rule of our guild. Most, I never
say `all`, slip casters of
domestic ware at craft fairs around here are very cagey about their
process. I wonder why that is, if they are proud of what they do.
The customer has the right to know what they are paying for.

I enjoy the discussion...we have it over our coffee table often, as
we do the difference between `print` and `reproduction`.
Best wishes from Lela
